Task 5: Evaluate the response (D1)
Report on feedback
Having explained in Task 4 some of the feedback I was given, I will now cover the feedback that was useful as well as the feedback that suggested improvement. I will then take that into consideration and decide how I will improve. I will go through each of the feedback in the same order as task 4.
As mentioned in task 4, there were many strengths. These included the mock ups, the font used in the mock ups and the magazines name. I believe that these were viewed as strengths because I showed a clear idea of them through the drafts, therefore the client could visually analyse it.
1: Fonts
I found the clients questioning on this very important because I need to show a clear font idea in the final product, meaning that I can not take too long deciding between two logos for the masthead. It was clear in my presentation that i was still undecided on which one to use despite showcasing only one of them in my drafts. I will develop product by choosing the one font that I prefer, making it brighter and bolder on the front cover, and will make it fit the grime theme. However, the client did say that he likes my font ideas, so it may not require too much improvement.
2: Colour scheme
This is something very important to take on board because I need to ensure that the magazine is not too strong in one colour and varies more in each monthly issue. While a main colour of red is very good for the first one, it may be too focused on that colour and I need to ensure that the colour scheme has some more to it rather than just red with some white text included. However, I do believe that a set theme for the colour shows consistency and I plan to keep some sort of red theme to show the angry emotions associated with the genre. Overall, I didn't find this the most useful feedback but it is still important to consider.
3: Permission to meet the artist
I see this as very useful feedback because it requires me being able to take it into consideration and actually plan how I will get in touch with an artist directly or their agent etc. I therefore need to take this on board and conduct research online and find out the information for myself. For example: Email address, contact number, name, website and so on. Not all artists will be willing to meet or may not have the time to make themselves available. I believe that this aspect of the magazine is worth planning to ensure I can get the best outcome from my articles and interviews.
4: Type of magazine (Current/past and all grime/North London only).
The client was interested finding out what exactly the magazine will be based on entirely, which I thought was very useful to know. This was because the idea was not communicated effectively enough in the presentation so I must ensure that I take this on board otherwise the magazine may not show a clear idea on what it is trying to showcase. For example, I will ensure that the articles focus mainly on North London current and upcoming artists. If I do not, then the proposed theme of the magazine will be changed and it may not appeal as much to the target audience.
5: Name of the magazine (What it suggests)
With the name of the magazine being "NorthCityGrime", the client was unsure if it is communicates the message of North London or if it suggests any cities northern district. He did however like the name of the magazine so I don't believe that it is something that I must take on board but it shows that I need to communicate the concept of North London in a better way. The client and myself both agreed that because grime originated in London and most artists are from London, a magazine with the words "NorthCity" does pretty much suggest North London, however the feedback on this was mainly curiosity. I plan to keep the name due to the fact that the client was fond of it and I understand that this catchy name will work well as a masthead.
6: Content
This is something that I did not think of before the client pointed it out. It is something that I found very useful because without being told about it, I would struggle to think of ideas for a full magazine of relevant content. I will take this on board because I need to brainstorm effectively and decide on ideas for articles, otherwise I will definitely struggle. I understand that research of other magazines content will need to be research to provide me with inspiration. Contrastingly, Ill need to be creative to decide on different ideas and potentially make use of the help from others to broaden the chance of a great article idea.
7: Marketing
This is also very useful to my future production because even though I plan to market through social media, the client was curious to know whether I plan to market through other methods, and I should therefore think of other ways to reach the target audience. I could do this through flyers that are posted locally, creating a website (see 8), or handing out flyers on the streets to young people.
8: Website
Furthermore, the client suggested a website which would give some meaning behind the magazine. I believe this was a very good suggestion and I will take it into consideration as I believe it is also a good method of marketing the product. It could cost me and may take time so it isn't necessarily beneficial but I still understand how the suggestion is useful. The reason that a website could work out is because I could advertise it on social media, and once the target audience are on the actual site, there will be information on the magazine, sample articles from the latest issues, and a chance to buy a paid subscription for an electronic version.
9: Layout on articles
Another piece of feedback given and I found it very helpful having it pointed out by the client. It will be considered for the final product however it will be very difficult to change this to make it look informal or slightly messier without it seeming like a lack of effort. I will take it on board despite this. For example, I could make the font within each paragraph more unique rather than a basic serif or sans-serif making the articles stand out a lot more.
10: Sales figures.
I explained how I plan to sell 200 copies for the first issue, however the client insisted that this may be too low and asked if I agreed. I must take this on board because I should actually aim to sell more than 200 even though it is a number that is realistic enough for the very first issue. Aiming for high sales will allow the magazine to continue for longer, providing that those sales numbers are actually achieved.
Conclusion:
To conclude, presenting the pitch gave the client an insight into where I want to get with the magazine, and allowed me to use the feedback to decide how I will go about creating, marketing, and selling the product in the best way possible.
